Scripture to Read: Luke 11:9–13
Jesus not only taught on the persistence of prayer, but also on the earnestness and intensity of prayer. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:9–13, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” What is sad about many people’s prayer lives is that many of their prayers are nothing more than wishes they hope will come true rather than real prayers laid out to a loving Heavenly Father in Whom they trust in, cling to, and rely on. Jesus used an earthly father who loves his children and desires to bless them as an illustration, knowing that a loving earthly father would never intentionally harm his children by giving them something evil. Our Heavenly Father’s love far exceeds any earthly father’s love, and we can trust that He’ll give us exactly what we need. The greatest gift our Heavenly Father gives to all who ask is His Holy Spirit through Christ our Lord.
